The Cabinet of Ministers has approved leasing 15 plots of land and property owned by the Sri Lanka State Plantations Corporation (SLSCP), the Janatha Estates Development Board (JEDB) and the Elkaduwa Plantation Company Ltd., to selected investors on a long-term basis.

The decision was taken on a proposal submitted by the Plantations and Community Infrastructure Minister Samantha Viddyarathna, following recommendations made by the High Level Procurement Committee after evaluating the proposals received.

The Cabinet had previously approved inviting expressions of interest (EOIs) from investors to lease out underutilised land and property managed by the three entities, with the aim of ensuring their optimal utilisation. Announcing the decision at the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing yesterday, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said under the first phase, EOIs were invited for 1,514 hectares of land, 10 tourist bungalows and scenic spots, and 15 inactive factories.

He said a total of 470 interested investors responded. Requests for proposals were then invited from shortlisted investors, and 44 proposals were received for 30 plots of land and property. “These were evaluated by the High Level Procurement Committee, whose recommendations formed the basis of the Cabinet’s decision,” he added.
