The Cabinet of Ministers has taken a decision to ban oil palm cultivation considering its adverse effects on the environment, Minister of Plantations and Export Agriculture and co-Cabinet spokesman Ramesh Pathirana said.

Minister Pathirana said the decision has been taken at the cabinet meeting on 11 November during the last Government. He said the present Government would take action to implement the decision as it is.

There were protests in several parts of the island in the past, demanding the Government ban palm oil cultivation. The people claim that due to the cultivation of palm oil, the springs in their areas have dried up.
