The Cabinet of Ministers on Monday approved moving ahead with procurement activities for five sub-projects as part of efforts of the Climate-Resilient Sustainable Water Supply and Sanitation Project, a major infrastructure initiative valued at $ 250 million aimed at strengthening water security, sanitation services, and climate resilience countrywide.
The project, which will be implemented with funding support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), is a part of efforts to modernise Sri Lanka’s water and sanitation infrastructure, while addressing growing climate and urbanisation challenges.
It is designed to improve access to reliable and sustainable water supply and sanitation services, enhance the resilience of water-related infrastructure against climate impacts, and reduce non-revenue water losses in several areas in the Western Province.
“Of the total estimated project cost, $ 200 million is expected to be financed through the ADB’s ordinary capital resources,” Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said at the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing on Tuesday.
He said under this project, several major infrastructure components have been identified for implementation, including the upgrading of the Ambatale Water Treatment System, improvements to the Jubilee Water Supply System, a non-revenue water management initiative in Kolonnawa, the development of the Lunugamvehera Integrated Water Supply Scheme with a treatment capacity of 20,000 cubic metres, and the Jaffna wastewater management project.
The proposal to this effect was submitted by Housing, Construction and Water Supply Minister Anura Karunathilake.
