The Cabinet of Ministers this week approved the implementation of the updated National Fisheries and Aquaculture Policy, aimed at ensuring the sustainable management of fisheries and aquaculture while promoting equitable distribution of industry benefits.
The Policy, which has been periodically revised to meet evolving requirements, had not previously received Cabinet approval. Under the current administration’s policy framework, Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour, the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Policy has been redrafted to align with the Government’s economic and development objectives.
Addressing the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing on Tuesday, Cabinet Spokesperson and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said recommendations from the Department of National Planning were incorporated into the draft Policy.
“The Cabinet granted approval to implement the Policy and integrate it with other relevant national strategies,” he added.
