The Cabinet of Ministers earlier this week approved plans to revise the National Housing Policy to better address evolving challenges in housing and human settlements, with a focus on low-income communities.

The move aligns with the Government’s ‘A Comfortable Home – A Healthy Life’ housing framework under its broader policy vision, ‘A Thriving Nation – A Beautiful Life,’ which prioritises improved access to adequate and quality housing and infrastructure.

The existing policy, last updated in 2019, is set to be overhauled to reflect emerging global trends and current domestic needs.

“The revised framework will take a more comprehensive approach, covering all aspects of housing and human settlements,” Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said at the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing on Tuesday.

The proposal, submitted by the Housing, Construction and Water Supply Ministry, includes the appointment of a committee of experts to lead the revision process.

The updated policy is expected to introduce sustainable, forward-looking solutions aimed at improving living conditions, particularly for underserved and low-income populations, while ensuring a more coordinated and modern approach to housing development in the country.
