The Cabinet of Ministers at their meeting on Tuesday approved the preparation of a draft Bill to amend the Electricity Act No. 36 of 2024, following recommendations from a specialists’ committee appointed by the Power Ministry.

The Power Ministry Secretary appointed a specialists’ committee subject to the approval of the Cabinet of Ministers to obtain appropriate recommendations for amending the Electricity Act No. 36 of 2024.

The committee, formed with Cabinet approval, engaged in an extensive consultation process, gathering input from 59 key stakeholders in the electricity sector, and submitted views and proposals in writing. Apart from this, opinions from development stakeholders providing funds for development projects in the electricity field, as well as other parties enthusiastic over restructuring the electricity sector, have been obtained.

“After reviewing these insights, the committee submitted its final report outlining proposed amendments aimed at restructuring and modernising the country’s electricity sector,” Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said at the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing yesterday.

The proposal to this effect, submitted by Power Minister Eng. Kumara Jayakody, was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
