Cabinet approves € 4.93 m contract for 5 m NIC cards

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the award of a contract for the procurement of five million pre-printed polycarbonate cards required for the issuance of National Identity Cards (NICs), Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said yesterday.

Approval was initially granted at the Cabinet meeting held on 7 April, 2025, to commence the procurement process for pre-printed polycarbonate cards for the Department for Registration of Persons, Dr. Jayatissa said.

Bids were subsequently invited under the International Competitive Bidding procedure, with eight bids submitted for the procurement.

Following the evaluation of the bids and based on the recommendation of the High-Level Procurement Committee, the Cabinet approved a proposal submitted by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, in his capacity as Digital Economy Minister, to award the contract to M/s Muhlbauer ID Services GmbH of Germany.

The contract, valued at € 4.93 million, will cover the supply of five million pre-printed polycarbonate cards for the issuance of National Identity Cards, Dr. Jayatissa said.
