CSE rebounds on Friday but ends week with loss

The Colombo stock market yesterday staged a strong rebound though ending the week with losses.

The benchmark ASPI and active S&P SL20 gained by 1.6% yesterday but saw a 1.8% decline during the week.

Turnover yesterday was Rs. 2.5 billion (down from Rs. 3.9 billion average for the week) involving 98.8 million shares.

First Capital said the Colombo Bourse concluded trading for the week on an upbeat note as positive sentiment led to a broader market recovery.

The ASPI experienced some volatility within the day but ultimately registered a gain of 270 points to close at 17,088.

CINS, SAMP, HAYL, HNB and COMB emerged as the top counters that positively contributed to the index. Retail and HNW investors engaged in moderate trading with interest primarily towards Banking sector counters.

The Banking sector led turnover, contributing 28%, followed by the Diversified Financials, and Capital Goods sectors, jointly accounting for 24%. Foreign investors turned net sellers, with a net outflow of Rs. 42.3 million.

NDB Securities high net worth and institutional investor participation was noted in Hatton National Bank, Cargills, and Access Engineering. Mixed interest was observed in Panasian Power, Sampath Bank and East West Properties whilst retail interest was noted in HNB Finance, Kotagala Plantations and Prime Lands Residencies.

The Banking sector was the top contributor to the market turnover (due to Hatton National Bank and Sampath Bank) whilst the sector index gained 1.90%. The share price of Hatton National Bank increased by Rs. 5 to Rs. 320. The share price of Sampath Bank moved up by Rs. 2.25 to Rs. 121.25.

Diversified Financials sector was the second highest contributor to the market turnover whilst the sector index increased by 2.25%.

Panasian Power, East West Properties and Swisstek were also included among the top turnover contributors. The share price of Panasian Power gained by 50 cents to Rs. 15. The share price of East West Properties recorded a gain of Rs. 2.20 to Rs. 19.80. The share price of Swisstek appreciated by Rs. 4.30 to Rs. 71.50.
