The Colombo stock market yesterday recovered from a sharp early trading slide to close on the up and extend a rally into a fourth session. During the week, the ASPI gained 5.44% and the active S&P SL20 was up 5.2% as the market gained over Rs. 381 billion in value.

Yesterday, the ASPI ended up 0.52% or 109.35 points at 21,239.65 and the S&P SL20 gained 0.26% or 15.50 points to 6,045.38. Turnover was over Rs. 2.8 billion on nearly 112 million shares traded. Foreign investors were net sellers on a net outflow of Rs. 184 million. Despite the ASPI’s sharp gain, losers outnumbered winners 125 to 101. Top contributors to the ASPI were CARS, COMB, HNB, DIAL and DIST.

First Capital Research said the bourse came under significant selling pressure during the first hour of trading as investors engaged in profit-taking, before gradually regaining momentum as buying interest returned throughout the session. Trading activity was predominantly retail-driven, while crossing transactions recorded a decline, indicating relatively lower HNW activity.

The banking sector led the daily turnover with a share of 25%, followed by the capital goods, and materials sectors collectively contributing 31%.
