The Colombo stock market yesterday ended in red, failing to sustain a mid-week rally. During the week, the ASPI fell 1.07% and the active S&P SL20 was down 0.96%.
Yesterday, the ASPI ended down 0.33% or 68.26 points at 20,812.64 as 116 counters ended in red against 78 in green, and the active S&P SL20 fell 0.31% or 18.15 points to 5,883.50.
Market turnover was nearly Rs. 873.4 million on over 29 million shares traded, and foreigners were net sellers on a net outflow of Rs. 140.2 million.
Top negative contributors to the ASPI were CARS, COMB, SINS, LOFC and BUKI.
First Capital Research said the bourse experienced volatility during the first half of trading before facing a significant downward movement in the second half as selling pressure intensified, pushing the market into negative territory by the close.
Retail investor participation remained low, while HNW participation was relatively high and contributed significantly to market activity. SING was among the most actively traded counters, contributing substantially to the day’s turnover.
The banking sector led the daily turnover with a share of 28%, followed by the real estate management and development, and diversified financials sectors collectively contributing 31%.
