The Colombo stock market yesterday ended a bearish week on the up. During the week, the ASPI fell 2.38% and the active S&P SL20 declined 1.61%.

Yesterday, the ASPI ended up 0.41% or 82.57 points at 20,316.91 and the S&P SL20 gained 0.45% or 26.19 points to 5,788.75. Market turnover was over Rs. Rs. 1 billion on over 70 million shares traded. Foreign investors were net sellers on a net outflow of Rs. 157.5 million.

First Capital Research said the bourse rebounded into positive territory after the heavy selling witnessed in previous sessions created opportunities for investors to capitalise on discounted prices, supporting a recovery in market sentiment.

Both retail and HNW investor participation remained below average levels, reflecting relatively subdued market activity. Contributors to turnover were broadly balanced between the two investor segments, while blue-chip counters and banking stocks were the largest contributors to market turnover.

The diversified financial sector led the daily turnover with a share of 22%, followed by the capital goods, and food, beverage and tobacco sectors collectively contributing 31%.
