The Colombo stock market failed to sustain a two-session gain to end the week in red.
During the week, the ASPI fell 1.09% or 232.67 points and the active S&P SL20 was down 0.95% or 57.12 points despite a brief recovery on Wednesday and Thursday.
With 139 counters closing in red against 76 in green yesterday, the ASPI ended down 0.13% or 26.63 points at 21,172.74 and the S&P SL20 was down 0.06% or 3.31 points at 5,942.56. The contributors to the ASPI decline were led by JKH followed by HNB, CINS, GRAN and BREW.
Turnover was over Rs. 2.45 billion on over 93.5 million shares traded while foreign investors were net buyers on a net inflow of Rs. 1.07 billion.
First Capital Research said market activity was supported by a large, negotiated crossing in United Motors Lanka (UML), while HNW investor participation remained strong. Retail participation remained broadly in line with Thursday’s levels.
The retailing sector led the daily turnover with a share of 42%, followed by the banking, and capital goods sectors collectively contributing 33%.
