Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananda Wijepala yesterday informed the House that detectives from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) have submitted a request to the Matara Magistrate’s Court to confiscate assets belonging to suspended Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Thennakoon.

This development coincided with Thennakoon’s surrendering to the Court yesterday morning, after evading arrest for over 20 days.

Minister Wijepala also revealed that the CID officers conducted an inspection on Tuesday (18), at a residence owned by Thennakoon, located at No. 76/A/7, 7th Lane, Gangani Gardens, Hokandara—and during the search, the officers discovered 795 bottles of foreign liquor and 214 bottles of wine, totalling 1,009 bottles.

In addition, he said officers seized a pistol believed to be Thennakoon’s personal firearm, along with two Apple mobile phones. Wijepala stated that the CID expects to extract significant information from the confiscated mobile devices, as part of their ongoing investigations.

The Minister justified that these findings were being disclosed, due to the considerable public interest the case has drawn.
