CEB orders temporary shutdown of large rooftop solar systems to stabilise grid

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has requested large-scale rooftop solar system owners to temporarily disconnect their systems for next 10 days starting today (10), citing grid stability concerns during a period of low demand and high solar generation.

According to the CEB, rooftop solar installations exceeding 300 kW capacity will be required to switch off between 10 and 20 April, coinciding with the extended holiday season and prevailing sunny weather conditions.

The utility said the move is necessary to maintain the stability and reliability of the national grid, as reduced electricity demand during holidays combined with high solar output could create imbalances in power supply.

The CEB noted that while solar generation plays an increasingly important role in the country’s energy mix, managing fluctuations, particularly during periods of excess generation, remains a technical challenge.

Expressing appreciation for the cooperation of solar system owners, the CEB said the temporary measure is aimed at ensuring uninterrupted and stable electricity supply across the country during this time for grid operations.
