The easing of deflationary conditions that commenced in March 2025 continued into April 2025, in line with the Central Bank of Sri Lanka’s (CBSL) near-term projections.

The CBSL said headline inflation, as measured by the year-on-year (YoY) change in the Colombo Consumer Price Index (CCPI, 2021=100), recorded a slower pace of deflation at 2.0% in April 2025 compared to the deflation of 2.6% recorded in March 2025.

The Non-Food deflation YoY decelerated to 3.6% in April 2025 from 4.1% in March 2025. Further, Food inflation YoY accelerated to 1.3% in April 2025 from 0.6% recorded in March 2025.

The CBSL said on a month-on-month basis, the CCPI decreased by 0.18% in April 2025, for which the Food category contributed by -0.12% and the Non-Food category contributed by -0.07%.

Meanwhile, core inflation YoY, which reflects the underlying inflation trends in the economy, increased marginally to 0.8% in April 2025 from 0.7% recorded in March 2025.

“The projections indicate a further easing of deflationary conditions in the coming months. Inflation is projected to turn positive around mid-2025 and is expected to gradually converge to the targeted level of 5%,” the CBSL said.
