BASL calls for prompt and smooth transition of power

• Says all parties must understand urgency of situation
• Stresses a smooth transition of power is necessary to ensure important decisions relating to economy and other areas are addressed
• Insists President’s resignation must not be delayed
• Calls for all-party Govt. with PM acceptable to all parties
• Condemns attacks on journalists, burning of PM’s residence
• Appeals to protestors to safeguard public property

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) yesterday called for the smooth and prompt transition of power to a new President and Government and requested all parties concerned not to delay the process of transition

“We call upon the present President, Prime Minister, leaders of all political parties and MPs to understand the gravity of this situation. They have an obligation by the people to ensure that the transition is smooth,” BASL President Saliya Pieris PC said.

He said such a process is important for the stability of this country as important decisions have to be taken in respect of the economy, finance, health, fuel etc. “For this reason, we cannot have instability for a long period of time. Everyday matters,” he told reporters at a press briefing.

He said that while doing so it is important for those involved in the process to keep in mind the aspirations and demands of the people which were reflected by the mass protest held on Saturday.

He said that the Speaker has announced that the President would resign on Wednesday and there should be no delay in this.

The BASL President also reiterated its proposals for the setting up of a Government of national unity and an Advisory Council and appointment of a Prime Minister acceptable to all parties

“They must come forward with a common program to address the economic and social issues in the country and address the issues of shortages such as fuel, gas and rising costs. We implore all involved in the process to understand the urgency of this situation,” he said.

The BASL also called on the protesters occupying the President House, the Presidential Secretariat and Temple Trees to safeguard those properties

“The sanctity of these offices be respected. This is a time that everyone must respect the rule of law, respect democracy and act with unity,” he said.

The BASL President also condemned the attacks on journalists on Saturday night near the private residence of the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and also the arson attack on the PM’s private residence.

“We wish to say all acts of violence should be thoroughly condemned and investigated impartially. All acts of violence by any party will destroy our country, damage the country, worsen the economic status and worsen the plight of the people,” BASL Chief Pieris added.
