Sri Lanka’s tourist arrivals have crossed the 800,000 mark so far this year, raising cautious optimism about reaching the Government’s ambitious 3 million visitor target for 2026, despite a recent slowdown.
From 1-15 April, the country welcomed 809,595 tourists, a marginal 0.8% year-on-year (YoY) decline compared to the same period last year, according to the latest data released by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA).
However, momentum has weakened in April. Arrivals during the first 15 days of the month fell 27% YoY to 68,961, with the daily average declining to 4,597 from 6,261 a year earlier. The dip comes amid the ongoing US-Israel war on Iran, which has impacted global travel sentiment.
India continues to dominate as Sri Lanka’s largest source market, contributing 19,821 visitors or 29% of total arrivals between 1 and 15 April. On a cumulative basis, India leads with 167,095 tourists, followed by the UK (84,748) and Russia (69,478).
Looking ahead, the SLTDA has outlined three growth scenarios for April. A lower-bound estimate projects 195,084 arrivals, while a conservative scenario forecasts 209,783 visitors. An optimistic outlook places potential arrivals at 236,597 for the month.
While the early-year performance keeps Sri Lanka within reach of its annual targets, the April dip highlights the sector’s vulnerability to external shocks, reinforcing the need for sustained market diversification and demand recovery efforts.
