Attorney General Dappula de Livera has written to the President’s Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundera, requesting a copy of the final report of the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) that probed the 2019 Easter Day terror attacks.

An AG Department official said that the request was made in order to consider charges against those who have been named in the report.

Opposition lawmakers, too, have requested that a copy of the report be tabled in the House for their perusal.

The final report of the CoI was handed over to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa by the Commission Chairman Supreme Court Judge Janak de Silva on 1 February.

Former President Maithripala Sirisena appointed the CoI on 22 September 2019 to investigate and report on the series of terrorist attacks on Easter Sunday and to recommend necessary action based on the findings.

Its term was subsequently extended by the current President.

The Commission recorded evidence from 457 people over a period of 214 days. Among them were members of the political authority and the security services, as well as those affected by the carnage and related activities.

The report comprises 472 pages, 215 annexures and six volumes.

The other members of the Commission were Court of Appeal Judge Nishshanka Bandula Karunaratne, retired Supreme Court Judges Nihal Sunil Rajapaksha and A. L. Bandula Kumara Atapattu, and former Secretary to the Ministry of Justice W. M. M. R. Adhikari. The Secretary to the Commission was H. M. P. Buwaneka Herath.
