Top universities to compete in CFA Institute Research Challenge Sri Lanka 2023/24

CFA Society Sri Lanka yesterday announce that teams from the University of Colombo, the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, and two teams from the University of Kelaniya have qualified for the local finals, following an extensive grading process. The finals are scheduled for 27 February at the Colombo Stock Exchange

Each university team consisting of five students, will present their analysis and buy/sell/hold recommendations on the subject company, hSenid Business Solutions PLC, to a panel of distinguished judges from the investment community. Their presentation is the culmination of months of research, rigorous training, interviews with the company management, and preparation, under the supervision of their faculty advisor and a dedicated industry mentor. 

The winning team of the local finals will advance to the sub-regional competition and have a chance to progress to the regional and global competitions thereafter. This year, the CFA Institute Global Research Challenge competition will be held on 13 May in Warsaw, Poland.

CFA Society Sri Lanka President Aruna Perera said that this time witnessed the highest number of teams participating in this annual educational initiative, which promotes best practices in equity research among the next generation of analysts through hands-on mentoring and intensive training in company analysis and presentation skills. The teams that participated represented both public and private universities – University of Colombo, University of Jaffna, University of Kelaniya, University of Moratuwa, University of Peradeniya, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, University of Wayamba, Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka, NSBM Green University and Royal Institute of Colombo. 

CFA Society Sri Lanka Research Challenge Committee Chairperson Eneeshya Perera expressed how pleased she is with the enthusiastic response from universities participating in the CFA Institute Research Challenge Sri Lanka 2023/24, and highlighted that this initiative not only promotes excellence in equity investment research but also equips students with essential skills and training on aspects such as financial analysis, environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations, and effective communication. She looks forward to the presentations from the top four teams at the final event and extends her best wishes to all participants.
