SEC publishes children’s storybook to promote financial literacy

The Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka (SEC) published a children’s storybook titled “Madura’s Bamboo Flute Dream” in all three languages, aimed at promoting financial literacy among secondary school students. This initiative forms part of the SEC’s ongoing efforts to enhance financial literacy and encourage an entrepreneurial mindset among young learners.

Last week, SEC Chairman Senior Prof. D.B.P.H. Dissabandara presented the publication to Prime Minister and Higher Education Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya.

Authored by Dr. Indira Lilamani Ginige and illustrated by Janakie Sooryarachchi, the book has been designed as an engaging and age-appropriate resource for schoolchildren. It complements the proposed introduction of the subject “Financial Literacy and Entrepreneurship” under the forthcoming education reforms.

The SEC intends to distribute the book free of charge to schools nationwide, encouraging parents, principals, and teachers to guide students particularly those in Grades 6 to 9 in reading and learning from Madura’s story. The book illustrates how children can pursue their dreams, develop a sound understanding of personal finance, manage resources wisely, and build habits of earning, saving, spending, and investing responsibly. By following the examples set by adults and applying these lessons in their daily lives, students are empowered to become self-reliant and contribute positively to society.

Through this initiative, the SEC hopes to provide students with the tools to explore their aspirations, cultivate financial awareness, and pave the way for a stronger, future-ready Sri Lanka.
