The Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka (SEC), the regulator of Sri Lanka’s capital market, commemorated its 39th anniversary with an overnight Pirith Chanting Ceremony on 23 October followed by a Maha Sanghika Dana (Almsgiving) on 24 October, 2026, at its office at the World Trade Center, Colombo.

Established on 23 October 1987, the SEC has completed nearly four decades of dedicated service in regulating, developing, and strengthening Sri Lanka’s capital market. Throughout its 39-year journey, the Commission has played a pivotal role in fostering a fair, efficient, transparent, and resilient market environment that supports investor confidence and sustainable economic growth.

Over the years, the SEC has been instrumental in transforming the capital market into a key pillar of Sri Lanka’s financial system and economy. Through proactive regulation, robust enforcement, enhanced corporate governance standards, investor education initiatives, and market development efforts, the Commission has worked tirelessly to safeguard investors and uphold market integrity. These efforts have helped create a trusted investment environment, facilitating capital formation, enabling businesses to raise long-term funding, attracting domestic and foreign investment, and contributing to national economic development and prosperity.

As the SEC marks this important milestone, the Commission reaffirms its commitment to strengthening the regulatory framework, embracing innovation, promoting market transparency, and enhancing investor protection to ensure the continued growth and resilience of Sri Lanka’s capital market.

The religious observances were organised to invoke blessings on the Commission, its leadership, and staff, and to seek strength and guidance as the SEC continues to fulfill its mandate in serving the nation and the investing public.

Chairman Snr. Prof. Hareendra Dissabandara, together with members of the Commission, staff of the SEC, and Colombo Stock Exchange officials, participated in the religious observances, reflecting on the Commission’s achievements over the past 39 years and its vision for the future.

As it enters its 40th year, the SEC remains steadfast in its mission of protecting investors, maintaining fair and orderly markets, reducing systemic risk, and supporting the development of a vibrant capital market that contributes to Sri Lanka’s long-term economic progress.
