Prof. Ajith Medis
New CEO Prof. Ajith Medis is to drive strategic growth and transformation at SMB Finance PLC.
His appointment marks an important step in the company’s strategic journey towards sustainable growth, stronger business performance, and new opportunities in Sri Lanka’s evolving financial services industry.
With over 30 years of experience spanning financial services, strategic management, marketing, and academia, Prof. Medis brings a distinctive combination of corporate leadership, strategic insight, and academic expertise to the role. His appointment reflects the importance of strategic direction, operational excellence, and market responsiveness in building resilient and competitive financial institutions.
Prof. Medis is currently a Professor of Strategy at the University of Kelaniya. Throughout his career, he has held several senior positions in the corporate and financial sectors, contributing to business development, organisational transformation, and strategic decision-making.
His extensive industry experience includes serving as a Director of Alliance Finance PLC, Chief Executive Officer of PMF Finance PLC, and a board member of companies in other sectors. He has also provided consultancy services to more than 30 finance companies in Sri Lanka and overseas, advising organisations on a wide range of strategic and operational challenges.
A key area of his expertise is business transformation and performance improvement. His work has included developing turnaround strategies for financially and operationally challenged organisations, strengthening revenue and profitability, establishing sound corporate fundamentals, and positioning businesses for sustainable growth. This blend of strategic thinking and practical industry experience enables him to approach business challenges with a focus on both immediate performance and long-term value creation.
Prof. Medis’s academic qualifications further complement his corporate experience. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Special) Honours degree from the University of Kelaniya, a Master of Business Administration from the Postgraduate Institute of Management (PIM), University of Sri Jayewardenepura, and a Ph.D. from Management and Science University, Malaysia. He also holds postgraduate diplomas and maintains affiliations with several professional bodies.
