MBSL receives multiple prestigious awards in recognition of empowering SME sector

In recognition as the Best Service Provider for Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SME), the Merchant Bank of Sri Lanka & Finance PLC (MBSL) was awarded multiple prestigious regional awards recently. MBSL was recently crowned the Best Service Provider for SMEs at the Asia Leadership Awards 2019 in Mumbai and the South Asian Business Excellence Awards in Colombo.

MBSL was conferred the prestigious Asia Leadership Awards 2019 which was held at Taj Lands End in Mumbai, India in recognition for the company’s devoted service and immense contribution in empowering SMEs in Sri Lanka. 

The award was received by Chairman Dr. Sujeewa Lokuhewa and Chief Executive Officer (Actg) Jude Gamalath who represented MBSL at the award ceremony in Mumbai which recognised over 30 industry categories. The Asia Leadership Award 2019 was initiated by the Leadership Federation with the objective of recognising and felicitating excellence, business results, exemplary achievements and pioneering efforts across diverse sectors. 

Previously, MBSL was honoured as the Best Service Provider for SMEs at the South Asian Business Excellence Awards 2019, in a colourful awards ceremony held at Hilton, Colombo. The aim of the South Asian Business Excellence Awards is to acknowledge and reward innovators in the corporate world for their outstanding work. 

The awards strive to reward companies that attempt to deal with or have transcended the challenges of an increasingly challenging and changing market using innovative approaches and effective management combined with experience and dedication. The management by C-Level executives is also honoured by the awards along with the companies. 

Commenting on the recent achievement, Dr. Lokuhewa stated that the recent awards conferred to MBSL are a testament of the MBSL’s dedication towards empowering SMEs in Sri Lanka. 

“As a premier financial institution in the country, we strive towards empowering SMEs that are playing a crucial role in contributing immensely towards the growth of the national economy. MBSL offers many services to the SME sector which include specialised loans, draft facilities, micro finance options and gold loan facilities. The success of SMEs is linked to our success as an institution that is dedicated towards providing the best service while contributing towards building a strong national economy,” Dr. Lokuhewa said. 

Gamalath stated that MBSL has been conferred the Best Service Provider for SMEs for the second consecutive time this year because of their commitment towards driving the success of SMEs. “We understand the needs of SMEs and we are firmly committed towards empowering this sector to reach greater heights by also providing new opportunities and tools for their growth,” Gamalath stated. 

MBSL entered the Sri Lankan financial sector as the country’s pioneer merchant bank in 1982 and was quoted on the Colombo Stock Exchange in 1991. Subsequently registered as a licensed finance company under the Finance Business Act No. 42 of 2011 under the regulatory purview of Central Bank of Sri Lanka. 

MBSL caters to a wide range of customers through its key business activities which include deposit mobilisation, savings, leasing, loans, corporate advisory and capital market services, gold loan and real estate through a widespread network of 49 customer touch points including the Head Office. MBSL is a subsidiary of State-owned financial powerhouse Bank of Ceylon which holds a strategic stake of 74%.
