Sri Lanka’s growth in active credit cards slowed in April, according to Central Bank data.

The number of active credit cards increased by 12,999 in April, down from an increase of 22,473 recorded in March.

Total active credit cards stood at 2,228,852 at end-April, up 0.6% from 2,215,853 a month earlier.

During the first four months of 2026, the number of active credit cards increased by 63,070, representing growth of 2.9%.

The latest figures indicate a moderation in the pace of expansion following stronger growth in recent months, although the overall number of active cards remains on an upward trajectory.

Active credit cards increased by 157,730 or 7.8% during 2025, following growth of 91,371 or 4.8% in 2024. The expansion was supported by the economic recovery, lower interest rates and aggressive promotional campaigns by card issuers.

Despite the slowdown in April, the number of active credit cards remains above pre-crisis levels, reflecting the gradual recovery in consumer spending and credit demand.
