In recent years, annual reports in Sri Lanka have begun to take on a new life, moving beyond static documents into more interactive, technology-led experiences. With the rise of AI and conversational tools, companies are now exploring smarter ways to help stakeholders access the information they need, without having to read hundreds of pages.

In Sri Lanka, there are over 200 listed companies required to publish an annual report each year. Only a small fraction, roughly 2–3%, have embraced interactive digital formats to make these reports more accessible and engaging. However, accessibility does not automatically equal usability. Annual reports are comprehensive by design, often spanning 200 to 300 pages and catering to a wide and diverse group of stakeholders. Investors, analysts, regulators, employees, media, and the public all turn to these documents for information, but rarely for the same reasons. Most stakeholders are not reading the report end to end. They are searching for specific insights, metrics, or narratives relevant to their role or interest.

This creates a familiar challenge. Stakeholders spend significant time navigating dense sections, scanning tables, and trying to identify where the information they need actually sits. For newer audiences, particularly late Millennials and Gen Z stakeholders, the traditional format can feel overwhelming and outdated. The way information is packaged no longer matches how people are accustomed to consuming or interacting with content in a digital-first world.

In 2025, Enfection partnered with People’s Leasing and Finance PLC to launch an AI Avatar-powered interactive annual report, which also incorporated searchable dashboards and visualised data insights. Enfection helps organisations turn mandatory annual reports into meaningful digital experiences. This solution demonstrates how AI can simplify complex corporate information and make it instantly accessible to diverse stakeholders.

Globally, the shift is already underway. AI agents and conversational interfaces are becoming the preferred way to access complex information, allowing users to ask direct questions and receive precise, contextual answers without having to sift through entire documents. This shift is just as relevant for annual reports as it is for any other data-heavy format.

“The annual report is evolving from a static document into an intelligent engagement platform. We are also seeing organisations extend AI agents into sustainability reporting and graph-based visual storytelling,” Enfection Chief Growth Officer Rasanga Abhishek said.

Enfection became the first in the market to introduce an AI Avatar within an annual report, setting a new benchmark for corporate reporting. By combining a conversational interface with intelligent search capabilities, the experience allowed users to explore the report through natural questions rather than time-consuming page searches. This shift reflects a wider change in how people search for information.

Traditional keyword searches are increasingly giving way to question based, conversational engines that deliver precise answers instantly. Annual reports should not be an exception. By adapting to this model, companies can make complex financial information easier to access, understand, and engage with in the years ahead.
