The Colombo stock market yesterday sustained its new found optimism amidst positive investor sentiments.
The benchmark ASPI gained 136.16 points or by 2% and the active S&P SL20 by 0.66%. Turnover was nearly Rs. 6.21 billion involving 354.59 million shares.
Foreign participation in the market activity remained at subdued levels with foreign investors turned net buyers with a net inflow of Rs. 50 million.
First Capital said the Bourse carried forward the positive momentum built over recent sessions, supported by elevated levels of investor activity. The ASPI ended the session in the green, closing at 19,379 with a gain of 136 points. The index demonstrated a steady climb with CINS, CFIN, NDB, COMB and CTC emerging as the top positive contributors.
Retail and HNW investors remained highly engaged with focus diverted towards mid-cap banks such as NDB and DFCC, alongside key conglomerate, JKH. Turnover for the day stood at Rs. 6.2 billion, which reflects a 11% decrease over the monthly average of Rs. 7 billion. The Banking sector dominated the turnover with an 18% share whilst the Capital Goods and Diversified Financial sectors jointly contributed around 31%.
NDB Securities said the high net worth and institutional investor participation was noted in John Keells Holdings, Piramal Glass and Access Engineering. Mixed interest was observed in Overseas Realty, Ambeon Capital and National Development Bank, whilst retail interest was noted in Industrial Asphalts, Co- Operative Insurance Company and Browns Investments.
The Banking sector was the top contributor to the market turnover (due to National Development Bank and DFCC Bank), whilst the sector index gained 0.86%. The share price of the National Development Bank recorded a gain of Rs. 3.50 to close at Rs 133.75. The share price of DFCC Bank declined by 25 cents to close at Rs. 139. The Capital Goods sector was the second highest contributor to the market turnover (due to John Keells Holdings), whilst the sector index edged down by 0.04%.
The share price of John Keells Holdings closed flat at Rs. 25. Overseas Realty and Ambeon Capital were also included amongst the top turnover contributors. The share price of Overseas Realty gained Rs. 2.40 to close at Rs. 36. The share price of Ambeon Capital moved up by Rs. 1.70 (6.54%) to close at Rs. 27.70.
