Citi Sri Lanka, in collaboration with Sarvodaya, a leading non-governmental organisation, has announced the launch of the “SELF” (Sustainable Entrepreneurship for a better Livelihood Future) project, an initiative aimed at empowering 25 vulnerable entrepreneurs in the Matara district. This strategic partnership combines Citi’s global financial expertise with Sarvodaya’s deep community roots to foster sustainable economic growth at the grassroots level.
The SELF project is designed to equip selected beneficiaries with essential entrepreneurial skills through comprehensive training in business planning, marketing, financial management, and sustainable practices. Beyond skill development, the initiative will establish a robust mentorship program, facilitate access to vital funding through small grants, and promote crucial networking opportunities. Citi volunteers will play a pivotal role, leveraging their financial acumen and marketing expertise to guide beneficiaries through the selection, training, and ongoing business development process.
“At Citi, we believe that true progress happens when communities are empowered from the ground up. Through our collaboration with Sarvodaya on the Sustainable Entrepreneurship for a Better Livelihood project, we aim to foster financial inclusion by equipping individuals with the tools, knowledge, and access they need to build resilient businesses. This initiative reflects our commitment to enabling inclusive economic growth and ensuring that no one is left behind in the journey toward sustainable development,” said Citi Country Officer Sri Lanka Ravin Basnayake.
Sarvodaya Shramadana Movement President Dr. Vinya Ariyaratne added, “Sarvodaya’s mission has always been to uplift communities from within. This collaboration with Citi provides invaluable resources and expertise, enabling us to offer a comprehensive support system for vulnerable individuals. The SELF project is a testament to what can be achieved when corporate responsibility meets grassroots dedication, creating lasting positive change in Matara.”
The SELF project is set to run for six months, with the Sarvodaya Matara District Centre continuing to follow up and monitor beyond this period, documenting success stories and ensuring long-term sustainability.
