The Colombo stock market continued to surge yesterday, extending a rebound into a third session and crossing the 21,000-point mark on improving investor activity. The market has gained nearly Rs. 390 billion in value since Monday.

The ASPI was up a strong 2.87% or 589.18 points at 21,130.30 and the active S&P SL20 gained a steeper 3.34% or 194.79 points to 6,029.88.

Turnover was over Rs. 5.4 billion on over 258.3 million shares traded. Foreign investors were net sellers on a net outflow of nearly Rs. 228 million.

With 227 stocks ending on the up with just 32 in red, the top contributors to the ASPI gain were COMB, DIAL, HAYL, LOLC and OSEA.

First Capital Research said the bourse extended its upward momentum with both indices recording substantial gains amid heightened investor optimism. Sentiment was further supported by positive developments surrounding the US midterm elections and global oil prices falling below the $ 100-per-barrel-mark, easing concerns over inflationary pressures.

Both retail and HNW participation remained elevated, with both investor segments contributing almost equally to market turnover. Market activity witnessed a substantial increase, with turnover reaching its highest level since August, signalling a significant resurgence in investor participation and confidence.

The banking sector led the daily turnover with a share of 20%, followed by the materials, and capital goods sectors collectively contributing 30%.
