The Colombo stock market yesterday reverted to positive territory fuelled by better investor activity.
The benchmark ASPI gained by 0.8% and the active S&P SL20 by 0.3%. Turnover was a high Rs. 7.8 billion involving 248.3 million shares.
First Capital said the market experienced a rebound in investor sentiment, leading to a recovery from the previous session. The ASPI closed in positive territory, re-entering the 18,000 zone with a gain of 145 points, ending the day at 18,142.
The session opened with strong upward momentum, which was largely sustained throughout the day, although some volatility emerged toward the close. CTHR, DOCK, AEL, RIL and JKH were among the top positive contributors to the index. Retail and HNW investor participation remained strong throughout the session. Turnover was 55% higher than the monthly average.
The Capital Goods sector was the top contributor to today’s turnover, accounting for a share of 28%. This was followed by the Banking, and Diversified Financials sectors which produced a joint contribution of around 30%. Foreign investors remained net sellers, with a net outflow of Rs. 224 million.
NDB Securities said high net worth and institutional investor participation was noted in Seylan Bank nonvoting, Access Engineering and Commercial Bank nonvoting. Mixed interest was observed in RIL Property, John Keells Holdings and Pan Asia Banking Corporation whilst retail interest was noted in Hela Apparel Holdings, Waskaduwa Beach Resort and Lanka Walltiles.
The Capital Goods sector was the top contributor to the market turnover (due to Access Engineering and John Keells Holdings) whilst the sector index gained 1.15%. The share price of Access Engineering increased by Rs 3.20 to Rs. 46.90. The share price of John Keells Holdings moved up by 20 cents to Rs. 23
The Banking sector was the second highest contributor to the market turnover (due to Pan Asia Banking Corporation and Seylan Bank nonvoting) whilst the sector index increased by 0.38%. The share price of Pan Asia Banking Corporation recorded a gain of 70 cents to Rs. 46.30. The share price of Seylan Bank nonvoting appreciated by Rs. 1.20 to Rs. 60.10.RIL Property was also included amongst the top turnover contributors with its share price gaining Rs. 2.90 to Rs. 25.10.
