The Colombo stock market yesterday opened the week in red amid mixed investor sentiment.

The ASPI was down 0.28% or 56.85 points at 20,260.06 with 152 counters ending in red against 56 in green, and the active S&P SL20 was down 0.10% or 5.72 points at 5,783.03.

Market turnover was nearly Rs. 1.2 billion on over 46.5 million shares traded. Foreign investors were net buyers on a net inflow of Rs. 7.2 million.

The main contributors to the ASPI decline were HHL, CIC, CTHR, SEMB and LOLC.

First Capital Research said investor sentiment remained mixed during the day, with fluctuations observed in the ASPI. In the global context, oil prices saw volatility with gains during the early hours, however moving upward later, underpinning the mixed interest in the Colombo bourse.

Blue-chip counters seemed to remain strong during the day. Retail investor participation remained at average levels, while HNW investors were the driving force of today’s turnover. Notably, an off-board transaction in CHOT contributed to 50.3% of the total turnover.

The consumer services sector led the daily turnover with a share of 51%, followed by the capital goods, and materials sectors collectively contributing 20%.
