The Colombo stock market yesterday survived a volatile session to open the week on the up.
Despite counters closing in red outnumbered gainers 108 to 106, the ASPI ended up a marginal 0.01% or 3.22 points at 21,623.66 and the S&P SL20 closed up 0.13% or 7.63 points at 6,066.55.
Market turnover was over Rs. 2.1 billion on over 63.9 million shares traded and foreign investors were net sellers on a net outflow of Rs. 18.5 million.
The highest positive contributions to the ASPI came from HAYL, ACL, SLTL, HNB and DIAL with negative contributions from BREW, CARS, HAYC, JKH and CCS.
First Capital Research said the bourse opened on a positive note, but profit-taking following two consecutive sessions of gains led to fluctuations throughout the day, limiting the market’s upward momentum. Despite the volatility, the market managed to close marginally higher.
Turnover remained around average levels, with retail investors accounting for a significant share of market activity, while HNW participation remained low.
The banking sector led the daily turnover with a share of 22%, followed by the insurance, and food beverage and tobacco sectors collectively contributing 32%.
