CSE opens week 0.11% on the up

The Colombo stock market yesterday ended the month of August and began a new week on the up by 0.11%.

Despite 108 counters closing in red against 104 in the green, the ASPI ended up 22.78 points at 21,338.69 and the S&P SL20 ended up 0.07% or 4.34 points at 6,009.68. Market turnover was over Rs. 1.01 billion on over 50.6 million shares traded.

Foreign investors were net buyers on a net inflow of Rs. 18.6 million.

The top contributors to the ASPI were BIL, CARS, WIND, JKH and DFCC with negative contributions coming from BREW, VONE, MELS, HNB and SEMB.

First Capital Research said the bourse began the week on a positive note amidst moderate activity levels, resulting in a subdued market turnover. The main index moved up at the open and succeeded in sustaining the positive momentum through to the close, despite an emergence of volatility and weakened sentiment towards the latter part of the session. 

Retail investor activity was the main driver of today’s activity, whereas the HNW segment appeared somewhat muted. Activity in the capital goods sector dominated turnover, contributing 30% of the total, followed by the food, beverage and tobacco, and diversified financials sectors, which together accounted for 31%.
