CSE opens new week on mixed note, driving ASPI over 19,000 to new high

The Colombo stock market yesterday began a fresh week on a mixed note as positive sentiment drove the ASPI past 19,000 to a new all time high.

The benchmark ASPI gained by 77.38 points or 0.37%, whilst the active S&P SL20 declined by over 8 points or 0.15%. Turnover was Rs. 5.3 billion involving 216.42 million shares. 

However, foreign participation in the market activity remained at subdued levels with a net outflow of Rs. 121.4 million.  First Capital said the Colombo Stock Exchange yesterday concluded trading on a high note, conquering yet another milestone as the ASPI crossed the 19,000 mark to close at 19,044 with a gain of 70 points. Conversely, the S&P SL20 edged slightly lower with a modest drop of 8 points. The session remained volatile, with retail investors showing stronger participation than HNW investors. 

The top positive contributors to the index were DFCC, CFIN, COOP, CTHR and ASCO. Turnover for the day stood at Rs. 5.4 billion, which reflects a 19% decrease over the monthly average of Rs. 6.7 billion. 

The Diversified Financials and Capital Goods sectors 

dominated activity, equally accounting for a 16% share each, followed by the Retailing sector which contributed around 13%. 

NDB Securities said high net worth and institutional investor participation was noted in Sunshine Holdings, Central Finance Company and Access Engineering. Mixed interest was observed in RIL Property, Singer Sri Lanka and Lanka Realty Investments whilst retail interest was noted in Co-Operative Insurance Company, Browns Investments and Prime Lands Residencies. 

Diversified Financial sector was the top contributor to the market turnover (due to Central Finance Company), whilst the sector index gained 1.48%. The share price of Central Finance Company recorded a gain of Rs. 11 to close at Rs. 286.

Capital Goods sector was the second highest contributor to the market turnover (due to Access Engineering), whilst the sector index decreased by 0.82%. The share price of Access Engineering lost Rs. 2.30 to close at Rs. 60.20.

RIL Property, Sunshine Holdings and Singer Sri Lanka were also included amongst the top turnover contributors. The share price of RIL Property increased by Rs. 1.60 to close at Rs. 30.10. The share price of Sunshine Holdings moved up by 60 cents to close at Rs. 27.60. The share price of Singer Sri Lanka 

appreciated by Rs. 4.30 to close atRs. 59.30.
