The Colombo stock market ended down sharply yesterday extending losses into a fourth straight session.
The ASPI was down 1.14% or 250.79 points at 21,760.31 and the S&P SL20 fell 1.08% or 66.10 points to 6,031.73. Only 36 counters closed in green yesterday against 200 in red. Foreign investors were net sellers on a net outflow of Rs. 92.25 million. Market turnover was nearly Rs. 2.8 billion on over 123.1 million shares traded.
First Capital Research said selling pressure persisted following the recent increase in interest rates, dampening investor sentiment. HNW investors dominated market turnover, while retail participation remained average.
The negative contributors to the ASPI were DIAL, COMB, MELS, HNB, and BREW. The capital goods sector led the daily turnover with a share of 18%, followed by the materials, and diversified financials sectors collectively contributing 29%.
