CSE extends losses over geopolitical concerns

The Colombo stock market continued to slide as investor sentiment continued to dampen over concerns of escalating tensions in the Middle East and rising oil prices

The ASPI ended down 0.50% or 108.26 points at 21,357.74 and the S&P SL20 was also down 0.50% or 29.95 points at 6,003.92. Market turnover was over Rs. 1.45 billion on over 35 million shares traded.

First Capital Research said the bourse remained under pressure, with concerns over rising global oil prices continuing to weigh on investor sentiment. Top negative contributors to the ASPI were MELS, BREW, DIAL, CARS and CARG. 

Retail participation remained subdued as investors continued yesterday’s wait-and-see approach, while HNW participation remained around average levels. The banking sector led the daily turnover with a share of 41%, followed by the capital goods, and diversified financials sectors collectively contributing 25%. Foreign investors turned net buyers, posting a net inflow of Rs. 16.1 million.
