CSE ends mixed on moderate activity

The Colombo stock market recovered from an early decline to close flat yesterday with both indices ending in opposite directions.

The ASPI gained a marginal 0.13% or 28.80 points to close at 21,927.00 and the S&P SL20 ended down 0.05% or 3.05 points to 6,011.31.

Market turnover was nearly Rs. 2.56 billion on over 102.2 million shares traded. Foreign investors were net sellers with a net outflow of nearly Rs. 68.6 million.

First Capital Research said the top positive contributors to the ASPI were DOCK, RICH, SAMP, JKH and CARG.  Both HNW and retail investor activity was moderate.

The Capital Goods sector accounted for 40% of total turnover, weighing on the contribution from Colombo Dockyard, while the Banking and Diversified Financials sectors contributed a combined 21%. 

Asia Securities Research said that DOCK, RICH, RIL, SINS, PABC, and JKH closed higher while SUN, RCL, LOLC, and HHL ended in red during the session.

The ASPI declined to an intra-day low of 21,866, down 32 points, during mid-day trading, before recovering swiftly to close in positive territory. 

Turnover was mainly led by DOCK (Rs. 368 million), DOCKR (Rs. 287 million), JKH (Rs. 193 million), and HHL (Rs. 136 million). DOCK, RICH and RIL came in as the major index movers while SFCL ended as the biggest laggard on the ASPI. 

The market breadth was negative, with 94 price gainers and 111 decliners.
