The Colombo stock market opened the new month yesterday ending in red on inflation concerns.

The ASPI was down 0.31% or 62.78 points at 20,079.55 and the active S&P SL20 fell 0.78% or 44.54 points to 5,701.86. Market turnover was over Rs. 921 million on over 54.5 million shares traded. Foreign investors were net sellers on a net outflow of Rs. 0.9 million.

With 118 counters closing in the red against 74 in green, the top contributors to the ASPI decline were DIAL, COMB, JKH, DIST and LAMB.

First Capital Research said the bourse opened on a positive note but reversed course after the first hour of trading, closing in negative territory amid concerns over rising inflation and increased domestic fuel prices.

Both HNW and retail participation remained subdued, although retail investors accounted for the larger share of turnover. Notable trading activity was observed in CWL. The banking sector led the daily turnover with a share of 38%, followed by the transportation, and capital goods sectors collectively contributing 36%.
