CSE closes on 10-week high, gains 13.5% from post-ME war low

The Colombo stock market yesterday reached a 10-week high, closing on the up for the second straight session continuing from the sharp rebound the previous session.

The ASPI was up 1.13% or 258.09 points at 22,997.86 and the active S&P SL20 ended up 0.75% or 47.13 points at 6,292.26.

Market turnover was nearly Rs. 5.3 billion on over 514.6 million shares traded. Foreign investors were net sellers on a net outflow of Rs. 22.3 million.

First Capital Research said the ASPI has rebounded 13.5% from the 19 March low due to the Middle East war. The bourse extended its upward momentum, closing firmly in positive territory amid improving sentiment driven by easing global oil prices, despite the unresolved status of the Strait of Hormuz.

Retail investor participation remained elevated, while HNW investor activity was relatively subdued, with continued interest observed in selected penny stocks. The materials sector led the daily turnover with a share of 26%, followed by the diversified financials, and capital goods sectors collectively contributing 24%.
