The Colombo stock market failed to sustain the previous sessions rally ending back in red yesterday.
With 120 counters closing in red against 92 that ended in green, the ASPI was down 0.4% or 85.70 points to 21,461.47 and the active S&P SL20 was down 0.25% or 15.26 points at 5,985.42.
Activity was subdued with turnover was below Rs. 1.7 billion on over 69 million shares changing hands. On the positive side, foreign investors remained net buyers on a net inflow of Rs. 55.9 million.
First Capital Research said that although the market traded in positive territory during the morning session, selling pressure emerged later in the day, reversing early gains and weighing on investor sentiment.
Retail participation remained at average levels during the session. The main negative contributors to the ASPI were CTHR, MELS, GREG, AEL, and CFIN.
The capital goods sector led the daily turnover with a share of 28%, followed by the materials, and food beverage and tobacco sectors collectively contributing 30%.
NDB Securities said high net worth and institutional investor participation was noted in John Keells Holdings, Chevron Lubricants and Janashakthi Limited. Mixed interest was observed in Commercial Bank, Renuka Agri Foods and Prime Lands Residencies, whilst retail interest was noted in Hela Apparel Holdings, Lanka Credit and Business Finance and ACME Printing and Packaging.
The capital goods sector was the top contributor to the market turnover due to John Keells Holdings, whilst the sector index gained 0.21%. The share price of John Keells Holdings increased by 10 cents to close at Rs. 19.80.
Materials sector was the second highest contributor to the market turnover due to Chevron Lubricants, whilst the sector index decreased by 0.25%. The share price of Chevron Lubricants gained 25 cents to close at Rs. 195.25.
Commercial Bank, Janashakthi Limited and Panasian Power were also included amongst the top turnover contributors. The share price of Commercial Bank moved down by 50 cents to close at Rs. 200.50. The share price of Janashakthi Limited recorded a loss of 10 cents to close at Rs. 12.The share price of Panasian Power declined by 90 cents to close at Rs. 16.10.
