Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe, together with senior officials of the CBSL, welcomed Dr. Gita Gopinath, First Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and Dr. Krishna Srinivasan, Director of the Asia and Pacific Department, along with other senior officials.

The welcome was ahead of the milestone conference on ‘Sri Lanka’s Road to Recovery: Debt and Governance,’ jointly hosted by the CBSL, the Finance Ministry, and the IMF yesterday.

In his remarks, Dr. Weerasinghe acknowledged the strong engagement with the IMF, which has been instrumental in facilitating Sri Lanka’s recovery from the recent economic crisis. He noted how this partnership has helped lay the groundwork for strong macroeconomic fundamentals, essential for ensuring stability and sustained growth.

The CBSL said the visit is particularly significant as it marks the first by a serving First Deputy Managing Director of the IMF in two decades, and comes as Sri Lanka and the IMF celebrate 75 years of engagement—a partnership that began with the inception of the CBSL.

“This historic moment marks a meaningful chapter in Sri Lanka’s long-standing partnership with the IMF, reaffirming a shared commitment to stability and supporting inclusive growth,” the CBSL added.
