Bond market yields edge up; activity moderates

The secondary Bond market yields were seen edging up yesterday on the back of selling interest, predominately on the 2030 to 2032 tenors while volumes changing hands moderated. However, the upward movement was curtailed at the elevated levels, as buying interest set in. Nevertheless, yields were seen closing higher than its previous days closings.  

The 15.03.28 traded at 10% and the 15.12.29 at 10.35%. The 2030s and 2031s experienced a see-saw movement as the 01.08.30 and 15.10.30 maturities traded up from intraday lows of 10.60% each to hit highs of 10.75% and recover to trade back down to 10.68%, 10.70% respectively. The 01.02.31 traded from an intraday low of 10.70% to touch a high of 10.80% before dropping back down to 10.75%. The 15.12.32 traded higher at the rate of 11.10% and the 15.01.33 up the range of 11.15% to 11.20%. The 15.10.34 traded within the range of 11.69%-11.72% holding steady, while the 15.08.36 maturity traded higher at 11.85% and the 01.07.37 up at 11.95%.

In the money market, the net liquidity surplus was recorded at Rs. 115.09 billion yesterday. Rs. 77.65 billion was deposited at the Central Bank’s SDFR (Standing Deposit Facility Rate) of 8.25% as against an amount of Rs. 0.76 billion drawn down from the Central Bank’s SLFR (Standing Lending Facility Rate) of 9.25%. 

In addition, the Domestic Operations Department (DOD) of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka mopped out Rs. 23.20 billion by way of an overnight repo auction at a weighted average yield of 8.70%, as well as Rs. 15 billion through a 06-day term repo auction at the weighted average yield of 8.75%.  

The weighted average yields on overnight call money and repos were recorded at 8.86% and 8.91% respectively. 



Forex market 

The USD/LKR rate on spot contracts was seen closing at Rs. 328.35/328.50 yesterday, against Rs. 328.30/328.70 recorded on the previous day. 

The total USD/LKR traded volume for 2 September amounted to $ 67.85 million.
