Bank of Ceylon (BOC), the country’s largest state-owned commercial bank, has once again been ranked among the Top 1000 World Banks by The Banker magazine, published by the Financial Times Ltd. UK. Bank of Ceylon has been placed at the top, highlighting its standing as the highest-ranked Sri Lankan bank on the list.

The Top 1000 World Banks Ranking is one of the most widely regarded global studies of the banking sector. It assesses banks across the world based on their Tier 1 capital strength, asset quality, and profitability, as well as the ability to maintain stability under challenging economic conditions.

This international recognition comes during a period of sound financial performance for Bank of Ceylon. In 2024, the bank reported the highest profit in Sri Lankan banking history, posting Rs. 106.9 billion. The momentum has carried into 2025, with the first quarter alone delivering a profit before tax of Rs. 30 billion.

Bank of Ceylon has played a central role in stabilising and strengthening the country’s financial system through a period of economic difficulty. Through its Business Revival and Rehabilitation Unit (BRRU), the bank has assisted entrepreneurs, industries and individuals who faced setbacks, with particular focus on reviving SMEs and MSMEs.

The bank has also supported youth-led businesses, women entrepreneurs, and export-oriented industries. It has introduced modern technology to strengthen agriculture, including support for drone technology that helps improve efficiency and competitiveness in the export sector.

Today, Bank of Ceylon maintains the largest network with more than 2,300 touch points and 660 connected branches. It also holds the largest market share in foreign remittances, supported by the launch of the BOC SmartRemit mobile application, which has made sending and receiving money from overseas faster and easier.

BOC’s international footprint includes branches in Chennai, Male, Hulhumale and Seychelles, and a full-service banking subsidiary in London, making it the only Sri Lankan bank with such an extensive overseas presence.

The bank has also advanced its digital capabilities and sustainability initiatives, introducing the BOC biodegradable debit card and enhancing customer access through digital services such as BOC Flex and SmartRemit.

Bank of Ceylon, which is marking 86 years since its establishment in 1939, continues to be a key part of the country’s economic framework. The Bank’s strategy for the years ahead focuses on strengthening its capital base, expanding digital services, supporting export growth and small businesses, and ensuring that every part of the country has access to reliable financial services.
