Justice Sithambarampillai Thurairaja, PC
Asia Asset Finance PLC said it has further strengthened its corporate governance framework with the appointment of Justice Sithambarampillai Thurairaja, PC as an Independent Director, following approval from the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.
The appointment marks an important milestone for Asia Asset Finance PLC, one of Sri Lanka’s established financial institutions with a legacy of over 55 years, an asset base of over Rs. 50 billion, and a growing island-wide network of over 100 branches. As the only Sri Lankan subsidiary of Muthoot Finance, one of India’s largest and most respected financial services groups, and backed by a strong A+ Fitch Rating, Asia Asset Finance PLC continues to reinforce its position as a stable, trusted, and customer-focused financial institution.
Justice Thurairaja brings to the Board nearly four decades of distinguished experience across the legal profession, public service, judicial administration, public policy, law reform, governance, and legal education. His appointment further strengthens the company’s commitment to transparency, regulatory confidence, ethical leadership, and sound corporate governance.
Justice Thurairaja retired from the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka in March 2026, after serving as one of the country’s most senior judges. In 2025, he served as the Acting Chief Justice of Sri Lanka, further highlighting his standing as a jurist of exceptional integrity, experience, and national importance. During his tenure on the Supreme Court, he authored over 200 judgments, including landmark constitutional determinations on matters of public and national significance.
Prior to his elevation to the Supreme Court in 2019, Justice Thurairaja served as a Judge of the Court of Appeal and held several senior positions in the Attorney General’s Department during a distinguished 27-year career, culminating in his appointment as Additional Solicitor General. In recognition of his exceptional contribution to the law and the administration of justice, he was conferred the prestigious title of President’s Counsel in 2019.
His distinguished career also extends beyond Sri Lanka. Justice Thurairaja served as a Puisne Judge of the Republic of Fiji and was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of Fiji, reflecting the international depth of his legal expertise.
In addition to his judicial service, he has held several key leadership positions within the justice sector, including serving as a Member of the Judicial Service Commission of Sri Lanka from September 2025 to March 2026. He has also contributed significantly to public policy and legal reform through national and international appointments, including as Patron of the Commonwealth Legal Education Association and Sri Lanka’s Representative to the Asia/Pacific Group on Money Laundering.
An accomplished academic, Justice Thurairaja holds a Master of Laws from University College London and continues to contribute to legal education through the Faculty of Law, University of Colombo.
His appointment further reinforces Asia Asset Finance PLC’s commitment to governance excellence, institutional credibility, regulatory strength, and sustainable growth.
