Healthy competition has been a catalyst in driving the 16 year old Sri Lankan Islamic Banking Finance industry forward. From a regional perspective, Sri Lanka is setting an example for the South Asian region. To quote Ariff Sultan of Ideal Ratings, Singapore: “It (Sri Lanka) is the only country that has the opportunity of dual banking which is conventional and Islamic.” Previous events have witnessed several Islamic Banking & Finance windows, competing with fully fledged Islamic Finance institutions, which epitomise the nature of the Sri Lankan IBF industry. Another very encouraging trend has been that the award ceremonies have produced multiple winners. Institutions have constantly strived to succeed by innovative product offerings, more intricate deal structures whilst, most importantly, posting strong financial performances, which is a key barometer of the health of the industry. This cycle is a true testament to competitive growth. UTO EduConsult hosts the SLIBFI Awards Night with KPMG as the Knowledge Partner. The latter deliberates on the awards along with a panel of independent 2nd tier judges. The award categories include institutional as well as individual awards whilst also recognising contribution to the society at large. The event also recognises and felicitates key contributors to the industry each year by conferring an Honorary Award. Some of the past recipients of this prestigious award include, A.I. Marikar, Osman Kassim, Krishan Thilakaratne, Naomal Goonewardena, Rushdi Siddiqui (formerly of Dow Jones) and even an institutional award to KPMG. The fourth SLIBFI Awards Night, scheduled to be held on 12 May at the Galadari Hotel, promises to be an exciting and unique event, with Minister of Industry and Commerce Minister Rishad Bathiudeen gracing the occasion as the Chief Guest.
