St. Thomas’ College Mt. Lavinia winners at 3rd annual CBB Inter School Drama Competition

In a generous gesture of encouragement and goodwill, leading schools in Colombo took part in the Inter Schools Drama Competition organised by the Council for Business with Britain to support their English Language Training Program conducted for teachers in rural areas. The event was graced by Chief Guest, John Rankin, High Commissioner for Britain together with judges, Keith Davies (Director British Council), Ranmali Mirchandani (National Manager South Asia for the Royal Academy of Dance UK), and Delon Weerasinghe (reputed director and playwright and Gratiaen Prize winner). The drama competition was sponsored by HSBC, and also supported by Nestle Lanka PLC, Norfolk Foods Ltd, GSK, BRC Lanka, AWS Institute of Education, Siddhalepa Group of Companies and Hilton Colombo Residencies. The four schools to reach the finals were – St Peter’s College, St.Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia, The Overseas School of Colombo and The British School in Colombo. Performances ranged from the traditional versions of Shakespeare and Greek Tragedy to the more modern version of ‘Living with Lady Macbeth, which showcased the amazing talent of young actors who did not rely on elaborate sets or costumes, but portrayed their genuine passion for acting. St. Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia was adjudged the winners of the 3rd Annual CBB Inter School Drama Competition, with The Overseas School of Colombo, St Peter’s College and The British School in Colombo placed first, second and third runners up in the competition. Trinity College, Kandy was recognized as the best outstation school. This CBB English Language program has now trained over 1200 teachers and reaches out to over one hundred thousand school children in remote areas of Sri Lanka, helping them acquire the right skill and communication in English. This year’s competition showed remarkable growth with an increasing number of schools participating. The high standards of performances clearly showed that the CBB Annual Drama Competition is fast becoming one of the best competitions of its kind in the country.
