SriLankan Airlines has partnered with the Gustav Mahler Society of Colombo (GMSC) to promote and enhance performing arts in Sri Lanka.
As part of this collaboration, the airline will support the upcoming ‘Spring Concert’ scheduled for tomorrow, 29 March, at the Lionel Wendt Theatre. The event will feature celebrated Sri Lankan classical guitarist Jude Peiris, along with renowned Japanese guest artists Hiroshi Kogure and Miyuki Funatsu.
SriLankan Airlines, the country’s national carrier, has been a strong advocate for Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage, particularly in the realm of classical Western music. Through this ongoing partnership, the airline continues to invest in home-grown talent and showcase Sri Lanka’s artistic brilliance to the world.
This year’s concert will feature two internationally acclaimed Japanese musicians. Classical guitarist Hiroshi Kogure, a multiple award-winner, has gained recognition for his expertise in Baroque music. Miyuki Funatsu, a distinguished oboist, has been a finalist in several prestigious international music competitions. Both artists are committed to nurturing young talent and bringing global classical music excellence to Sri Lanka.
SriLankan Airlines Head of Commercial Dimuthu Tennakoon highlighted the importance of supporting the performing arts from a tourism perspective. He noted that as Sri Lanka solidifies its reputation as a top travel destination, the development of music and theatre can significantly contribute to the tourism industry.
“Performing arts is a growing segment within the broader cultural tourism space and Sri Lanka’s ability to showcase its talents in music, theatre, and dance has immense potential to attract international travellers seeking cultural experiences,” he stated.
SriLankan Airlines Corporate Communications Manager Deepal Perera emphasised the airline’s dedication to connecting Sri Lanka with the global stage.
“As an airline, we are all about connecting Sri Lanka to the world, and this partnership allows us to do just that. Beyond tourism, we are facilitating an exchange of musical talent and traditions, fostering greater appreciation for the performing arts,” he said.
Perera also highlighted that the collaboration with the GMSC, which has been ongoing for three years, helps create opportunities for local musicians. “With the right opportunities, our musicians can make a mark internationally. By continuing this partnership, we aim to support their journey on the world stage,” he added.
Gustav Mahler Orchestra of Colombo Chief Conductor and Music Director Srimal Weerasinghe expressed gratitude for SriLankan Airlines’ support, which has helped in establishing a professional orchestra in Sri Lanka.
“SriLankan Airlines became an integral stakeholder in the development of Western classical music in Sri Lanka. Their support has strengthened the reputation of Sri Lankan orchestras worldwide and we are proud of the achievements this partnership has helped us attain,” he said.
Since its founding in 2018, the GMSC has worked towards revitalising Western classical music in Sri Lanka. The orchestra consists of over 150 musicians and performs more than a dozen concerts each season, including State, diplomatic and cultural events. Notably, the Gustav Mahler Orchestra of Colombo is the only Sri Lankan orchestra to have performed internationally, gaining recognition from esteemed global music organisations.
With six successful collaborations between SriLankan Airlines and the GMSC to date, the airline remains steadfast in its role as a patron of the arts. This partnership not only strengthens Sri Lanka’s cultural landscape but also contributes to its growing reputation as a hub for world-class musical performances.
