Corporate Sri Lanka urged to support HelpAge Sri Lanka fundraiser to prevent elderly blindness

HelpAge Sri Lanka, a leading national non-profit organisation with a 38-year legacy of serving vulnerable senior citizens, is calling on the corporate sector to support its urgent fundraising concert Symphony of Hope, scheduled for Friday 23 May at 7:30 p.m. at the Musaeus College Auditorium.

The concert marks over 16 years of continuous service by the HelpAge Charity Eye Hospital in Wellawatte—HelpAge’s flagship initiative—which has provided over 52,000 free cataract surgeries to underprivileged elderly persons since its establishment in 2009. Currently performing up to 20 surgeries daily, the Charity Eye Hospital faces mounting challenges as operational costs soar. It now requires approximately Rs. 500,000 each day to sustain this free surgical service.

Entirely donor-funded since its founding in 1986, HelpAge Sri Lanka delivers a comprehensive range of elder-focused programs including free medical and eye care, elderly day care, Ayurveda therapy, home care training, advocacy, livelihood assistance, and community empowerment initiatives.

The Symphony of Hope concert will feature a star-studded lineup of renowned local artists, including Sohan Weerasinghe, Annesley Malewana, Keerthi Pasquel, Mariazelle Gunathilake, Ashanthi De Alwis, Judy De Silva, Falan Andrea, Damien Wickramasinghe, and Rukshan Perera, supported by the band Aroh. Proceeds will directly support free cataract surgeries at the Charity Eye Hospital.

Corporates can contribute meaningfully by participating in sponsorship tiers that include branding opportunities at the event, and by encouraging staff engagement through ticket purchases or sponsoring surgeries under the Gift of Sight campaign. This initiative is critical in preventing blindness among over 500,000 elderly Sri Lankans who are currently at risk.
