The 41st General Convocation of the University of Jaffna commenced yesterday grandly at the University Indoor Stadium, under the leadership of the Chancellor of the University, Emeritus Professor R. Kumaravadivel.
The Convocation Ceremony will be held over three days, until Thursday in nine sessions.
At the event, the Graduates, university Officials, Lecturers, Professors, Deans, the Librarian, Bursar and Registrar first proceeded in a ceremonial procession. Accompanied by the auspicious sounds of Thavil and Nadaswaram music, the Vice Chancellor, Senior Professor T. Velnambi, and the Chancellor, Emeritus Professor R. Kumaravadivel, were escorted to the ceremonial hall with the Flag, ceremonial Umbrella and Alavattam.
Inside the hall, in the presence of thousands of people, including university lecturers, professors, members of the University Council and distinguished guests, the Chancellor, Emeritus Professor R. Kumaravadivel, and the Vice Chancellor, Senior Professor T. Velnambi, conferred degrees, diplomas, prizes and scholarships to graduates and diploma holders. Gold medals were also presented to high achieving students.
At this year’s Convocation, degrees and qualification certificates will be awarded to graduates from the 14 faculties of the University of Jaffna: the Faculty of Graduate Studies, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, Faculty of Technology, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Hindu Studies, Faculty of Siddha Medicine, Sir Ponnambalam Ramanathan Faculty of Performing and Visual Arts, the Faculty of Business Studies, Faculty of Applied Science, and Faculty of Technological Studies of the former Vavuniya Campus of the University of Jaffna. Degrees and qualification certificates will also be awarded to graduates who have completed their programmes of study through the Open and Distance Learning system at the Centre for Open and Distance Learning of the University of Jaffna.
