World Down Syndrome Day Celebrations – 2014 Colours of My World Art competition and exhibition

March 21st marks a very important day of the year as thousands of people across the world celebrate the World Down Syndrome Day to signify the uniqueness of Down syndrome. The annual observance of World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) aims to promote awareness and understanding of Down syndrome and related issues, and to mobilize support and recognition of the dignity, rights and well-being of persons living with Down syndrome. Past WDSD activities have had a tremendous impact, as it showcases the abilities, talents and accomplishments of persons with Down syndrome.
This year on the 23rd of March, Sunday, the Rotaract District 3220, the Interact Club of Royal College and the Ceylon Classic Car Club will join hands with the Kosala Dullewa Foundation to celebrate the World Down syndrome Day 2014 which will consist of four main projects; the awareness vehicle parade, medical camp, variety show and the art exhibition.
The art exhibition and competition named as “Colours of My World” is the most intriguing event of the day. Last year 630 arts drawn by children with special needs were displayed portraying the amazing talents and ideas they possess that blew the minds of the spectators. The entrance of the Nawarangahala of Royal College owned an entirely different yet a colourful and a joyful atmosphere on the day. It was really a wonderful experience to see how these children look at the world, nature and the day to-day activities which was creatively portrayed through the beautiful drawings exhibited. Simple yet talk thousands of words. All the drawings stood out from one another and projected 630 different views of this one world we live in. Truly astonishing!
The joy that rests in the eyes of the participants after seeing their drawings displayed in the exhibition, pointing at it and proudly showing their parents was a site that brought a smile to the faces of everyone around. The art competition and the exhibition is a great platform for children who are physically and mentally challenged to portray their talents to the general public. The WDSD celebrations gave an opportunity for these children not just to portray their talents but also sent out the message that they too are capable of what every other child does; to live in a world without boundaries. The art exhibition & competition “Colours of My World – 2014” will be a much awaited event of this year’s WDSD celebrations as well. Therefore if you wish the children in your institution/school or a personal contact to participate in the competition & exhibition, this is an opportunity they would not want to miss out. 50 winners from five age categories will be selected and will be awarded and all the participants will receive certificates at the prize giving which will be held on 23rd March 2014.
