Global Hand-washing Day (GHWD) is a global awareness campaign with the objective of reiterating the importance of cultivating good hygiene habits related to hand-washing. In celebrating GHWD 2014, Dettol launched a global campaign ‘Give Life a Hand’ which was aimed at raising awareness of the importance of hand hygiene in preventing needless deaths of school children from preventable illnesses, such as diarrhoea. Globally, Dettol has remained committed to ending preventable deaths of school children by changing their hand-washing practices. This year Dettol has already educated 20,000 students on hand-washing with soap. Dettol plans to cover at least 32,000 school children by the end of this year. The program is aimed at school children since they are more prone to diarrhoea and acute respiratory infections. Dettol has partnered with the Ministry of Health to conduct a comprehensive hand-washing program in the historic city of Anuradhapura. In keeping with Dettol’s pledge to educate Sri Lankan school children, Dettol has initiated hand washing programs in 33 schools in Anuradhapura. The program commenced on the on 15 October 2014 and a large number of school children in Anuradhapura were educated on the importance of hand-washing with soap. The children were given the opportunity of learning about germs and germ protection as well. They participated in interactive games and other educational programs which encouraged the hand-washing with soap as a means to prevent infection. “Educating school children on the importance of hand washing is vital. Several creative and interactive programs were conducted for school children in Anuradhapura to celebrate Global Hand-washing Day. One such activity included the composition of a song especially for Global Hand Washing Day 2014,” stated a Senior Public Health Inspector in Anuradharura. Commenting on the success of the program, Reckitt Benckiser Commercial Director Sinclair Cruse said, “Dettol has been operating with the message of everyday protection in Sri Lanka for generations. Dettol has provided affordable and accessible hygienic solutions to millions of Sri Lankan consumers. Dettol celebrates global hand-washing day in Sri Lanka each year by promoting hand washing habits among children.”
